Career Summary

More than twenty years of responsible and challenging management experience, primarily associated with the construction industry although my wider experience includes offices, workshops, retail outlets, manufacturing, laboratories, a zoo and a railway. I have worked both directly for contractors and clients, and in the role of a consultant on contracts from a few thousands to tens of millions.

Career History

I have been self employed as a Health and Safety Consultant/contractor and a CHAS (Contractors Health & Safety Assessment Scheme) certified assessor

During this time I have worked as a contract Health & Safety Manager for  an architectural metalwork manufacturer and installer, dealing with training, statutory testing, PQQs, audits, policy writing etc.  In addition  I did fire marshal training , fire and H&S risk assessments for a fire safety company, spent some 18 months as CDM Liaison officer for a leading FM company. further to this I was contract Health and Safety Officer for Whipsnade Zoo, during which time I  wrote a ten thousand word gap analysis for the zoo’s SSOW, as well as dealing with the day-to-day health and safety issues of the zoo, its contractors and visitors and setting up a new safety management system for its railway

Previously I was employed by EBSG Ltd as a Regional Health and Safety Advisor for a wide variety of small/medium size construction companies, primarily involved in new homes and refurbishment works. This involved a variety of tasks, in addition to giving safety advice – often quite detailed and at short notice due to unexpected issues arising out of working on sites where information is frequently unavailable, and carrying out safety inspections and audits (including ISO 14001 environmental) such as fire risk assessments, premises safety audits, and accident investigations as well as delivering training courses.

Prior to that I was The Open University Health, Safety and Welfare Co-ordinator which involved monitoring all contractors’ safety, health and quality issues on the Walton Hall campus, some 109 acres including woodland and a river, 58 buildings and a £30M+ p.a. capital budget. I also had an overview on major refurbishment works at the 13 regional centres.

I advised on H&S systems during the construction of the Martian Lander Beagle II, and arranged the health and safety for a visit by the Princess Royal.

I had arrived at this job  from    Jonathan James Ltd where I  worked as Site Manager

I worked on the refurbishment of the Grade I listed Chancery Court Hotel in Holborn before transferring to the refurbishment of the London School of Economics Library.

Health & Safety Services

It is a legal requirement for all businesses whatever their size to maintain health and safety in the workplace Unfortunately, smaller companies rarely have the resources or in-house know-how handle it themselves, while seeking professional help often proves extremely costly. For a small retainer my health and safety advice line gives you the ability to talk through your safety issues and get reliable answers to any questions you have and find out how new legislation or circumstances might affect you. This means you can also use me as your competent person (The law requires employers to appoint one or more Competent Person(s) to assist them in meeting their legal obligations. The Regulations also require sufficient resources to be devoted to managing Health and Safety) for both H&S and construction when completing PQQ’s and for SSiP submissions such as CHAS, Constructionline etc.
The way I add value for my clients is that by getting to know them and their businesses I ensure that their health and safety systems are specific to them; so many times I see people paying for services they don’t need, or would want only rarely for which they should only pay a one-off charge. I am not an insurance policy where if you need it you lose your no-claims bonus, although I am there to help in an emergency, I am here to look after you, my client, and your staff and others, and also your business by ensuring legal compliance, failure of which is becoming prohibitively expensive both for individuals and companies, and increasingly custodial sentences. For this reason, I only charge for what you require, I have no shareholders or fat cats to keep happy. I will produce bespoke H&S Policies, or review your existing policies ensuring they are relevant and removing extraneous material, for one of the issues I often have with H&S Policies is that by having too much unnecessary information it means although you appear to get more for your money (although paying for it by the pound is hardly the way to safeguard your employees or your pocket), you get increasing amounts of unnecessary and irrelevant information..

Additionally, because of its size and the difficulties of finding the important information the full policy is invariably unused and collecting dust, and as out of site means out of mind it is also often well past it use by date, which means no longer compliant.  I will produce bespoke H&S Policies, or review your existing policies ensuring they are relevant and removing extraneous material. They will be less expensive, cheaper and easier to review, more user friendly and won't require a manual handling course.Further to the above I can review, revise and advise on risk assessments as well as producing templates if required.
